Cheap Leather Sofas: What You Need to Know

 For many years, a quality leather sofa has been the epitome of classic elegance and luxury.  A tradition of solid, easy-to-maintain quality has added to the aura of gentility and classic ambience.  Finding a cheap leather sofa for sale may seem like a real bargain.

But there are both internal and external factors that determine the actual value.

 Quality leather sofas begin with a hardwood frame.  The finer grain of hardwoods allow screws, pins and fasteners to fit as tightly as possible.  Springs are hand-tied.  The upholstery is all leather, snugly fitted over ample padding to prevent shifting that leads to uncomfortable lumps or shallow spots.

 The most important external factor is the leather upholstery.  There may be a substantial difference in the weight or finish of leather used.  Half-leather upholstery refers to the practice of upholstering the front and seat with real leather, while back and sides are upholstered with a coordinating fabric.  Bonded leather is leather that has been recycled and reprocessed.  And “faux” leather isn’t leather at all, but a vinyl or plastic imitation made to look like leather.

 There may be many reasons a retailer sells a piece at a substantial discount.  Discontinued colors or styles need to be sold to make room for new additions. Be careful of trendy colors or styles.  In a few years, the trend may be gone, and the piece appears dated.

  Sometimes pieces are damaged in transit.  These can be excellent values if damage is out of sight and doesn’t effect structural integrity.  Ask to see what repairs were made to see if they may have weakened the structure of the piece.

 “Going out of business” sales may offer little recourse if a problem develops after the store closes.  Be sure to ask about warranty issues in these situations where “contacting the store” won’t be an option.
