If you are decorating a room or office with a fine, classically styled Chesterfield sofa or maybe one of their refined, elegant armchairs, then you have to take a few basic principals into consideration. While classic pieces of furniture such as these do tend to blend well into almost any room’s décor, there are things to do, and not to do, when placing them amongst other furnishings.

 First, don’t place any piece of good leather furniture, much less a piece of Chesterfield, in direct sunlight. The rays of the sun may look great as the gleam on the burnished leather but, over time, the UV rays can aid in the drying and cracking of the leather. This is especially true in offices or places where it cannot be certain the furniture will receive appropriate care and maintenance.

 While you don’t want them basking in the sun, you do want your Chesterfield sofa or armchair to shine. I’d place them in areas bathed in soft, ambient lighting. I love the look of a tufted leather sofa next to a fine mahogany end table and all of those lovely hues blended under the beams of a nice beaten-copper arts-and-crafts style lamp. The look is classic and contemporary all at once and shows the Chesterfield off to perfect advantage.

 Do make sure you keep potted plants and other moisture sources away from good leather pieces. Even when treated to repel water and stains, repeated exposure to water will discolor and damage even the best piece of leather furniture. Keep the plants in the sunlight and the Chesterfield out of it. They’ll both be happier that way.
