Bookcases- A Necessity cum Luxury

The history of bookcases goes far behind the time when man first started to write. It was the period when men used to write with their own hands and used small boxes to protect the written manuscripts within them. The people of noble character, usually clergymen used to posses these boxes with valuable information written in books. It can be inferred that keeping books was considered to be an honorable thing for the man who possessed them. The boxes used for securing books were usually made up of wood or steel. However, the trend of using bookcases began in the period when printing of books came into practice. Sheraton, Chippendale and John Danner have made enormous contributions in making shelves for keeping books. Their designs are considered matchless even in today’s era where lots of modern styles have emerged in market.

The history of book shelves mentioned here highlights the greatness of books in preserving knowledge among them. It conveys to us the importance of books as the valuable sources of knowledge that cannot be attained anywhere else. Thanks to the means of securing books through covering them with a box or putting in a shelf, we have been able to possess treasures of knowledge. It is because of the bookcases we have been able to restore the traditions and knowledge passed to us over generations. It would not be wrong to say that books provide a substitute for experience that one does not or cannot have due to some reason. For instance, one cannot go to Africa in a couple of days while being in Asia just by desiring so. Instead one can read a travelogue or a book to feel the experiences of being in an African state. There are lots of other things one can gain through book-reading.

The bookcases that are used to protect the books from getting destroyed exist in various forms. Generally they are found in horizontal position which allows space for keeping books into them. At times they are in the form of big cupboards or give the look of a closed door. However, the books are also located in glass cases some times which let the passers have a look at the spine of books. It also makes it easy for people to find the book of their interest or choice by peering through glass bookcases. Using glass as bookshelf, however, run the risk of getting it broken if mishandled. Therefore wood is also used as a material in building shelves for keeping books. It is rather stable and more reliable than glass in securing the books. Nevertheless, the most trustworthy material is steel which does not even has the danger of getting itself burned as is the case with wood. That is why the books with most valuable knowledge are usually housed in bookshelves made up of steel.

The bookcases are used in various forms these days. There are numerous styles available in which cases for books are built. There are shelves for keeping books in partings made up of wooden blocks of two, three, four or more boxes. You can buy one product of your choice from the market at affordable price. The market has various bookshelves of different colors and styles with keeping books of all sizes and shapes. For big-sized books, you can buy cases without roof. You can also select cases according to the amount of books you have with you.  If you have fewer books take the small one or if books are in abundance in your home, try big ones. Bookcases are no doubt a necessity and luxury for your house!
